SPIRITLESS SPIRIT
The Biographer of ‘Sree Narayana Guru’ Moorkkoth Kumaran’s eldest son Moorkkoth Kunjappa, Associate Editor of Malayala Manorama says
Sree Narayana Guru has come to ‘Edakkattu’ a place between Thalassery and Kannur. His stay in the house of Katachira Kannan Vaidyar. He is relaxing in the Varandah on an easy chair.
As usual, there was a crowd. I then a college student, was also amongst the gathering. Dear disciple of Guru, Guruprasad Swami took me there. People tell their grievances and offerings are made before Guru. He tells words of consolation. Guru gives fruits, candy and dried grape fruits received as offerings to the crowd.
On that occasion , a Tamil Brahmin women and her daughter came. They stood there with folded palms. The face of that young daughter revealed that she was a neurotic patient.
When Guru saw them he asked the particulars. After explaing the symptoms, they told that they believe that the difficulties are caused by the spirit of Brahma Rakshas (Brahmin ghost).
“ What is brahma rakshas?” Guru asked when they spoke of their belief in spirit.
The man with the young lady spoke: “ After the death of Brahmin his spirit enters in another body. It is believed that the entry of that spirit is called the possession of Brahma Rakshas. It is very difficult to exercise that spirit. It is not like other dead persons entry of spirits in other bodies.
Guru: “Do you mean that even after death of Brahmins, the spirit of them turn evil?”
That banter amused everyone. All laughed!. The scene totally turned serene. People were standing very anxious up to that time. Even the young lady’s mother laughed. It was noticed that a shadow of pleasing brightness was spreading in the young lady’s face too.
Guru continued with a smile: “If I tell the Spirit of Brahmin will leave off?”
“Will go. We have faith.” When mother told this, the young daughter looked at the faces of Guru and mother. A look so eloquent!.
Guru looked at the child. Red colour ascended the face of Guru. The face became flush and radiance spread in the eyes. Could not remember how much time was spent in this position. It was difficult to decide whether that was half minute or five minutes. Those moments made to lose memory with regard to consciousness of time.
Last Guru: “ No , child all have gone away.”
When the moment those words are heard, the turmoil, that was her facial expression till that time, descended from her forehead down to the face as if it was wiped off with a kerchief/ The young women’s face regained the look of an energetic girl.
Guru continued: “Go home. Take bath. Have food. Sleep peacefully.”
The girl looked at her mother. Both of them folded their palms and paid respect to Guru. And they returned home comfortably.
After that there was no trouble of any Brahmin devil.
